The Safer Drivers Course – Supplement Your Safety
As a learner driver what if there was a way to be better prepared for when you get your P1 provisional licence? What if you could supplement your driving practice with a carefully designed course, while also knocking 20 hours off of your 120 Learner Driver Logbook hours? The Safer Drivers Course is a two module course aimed at providing young drivers with low-risk driving responses and strategies.
The Safer Drivers Course is designed to give young people a relatable and supportive road safety program at a complex time in their lives and help them manage the greater responsibility of solo driving.
To be eligible for this course, you will need to hold a valid NSW driver’s license, be under 25 years of age and have 50 hours of on-road driving experience.
The experience gained during the course is aimed at lowering the on-road risks that contribute to crashes in young people, and is structured in an interactive and engaging way. It achieves this by building awareness of low-risk driving behaviours that lead to better resilience and safer driving choices.
Details of the Course
The Safer Drivers Course at PCYC is delivered through our extensive network of clubs across NSW. The course is 5 hours long and is divided into 2 parts, a 3 hour theory session and a 2 hour practical session. During the course learners will discover:
- Risky on-road behaviours
- The outcomes of these behaviours
- Recommendations and strategies to correct or overcome these behaviours
Module 1 – This 3 hour group discussion is led by a Facilitator to highlight on-road decision making, hazard identification, action outcomes, peer influence and life pressures. The discussion is designed to be engaging and a positive environment for ideas and feedback. This will provide effective management strategies and behaviours for learner drivers to become safer drivers.
Module 2 – This is a 2 hour on-road coaching session involving two learner drivers in the car with a coach. This session is aimed at putting the lessons learnt in Module 1 into practice and ultimately helping young drivers identify risks and minimise risk taking behaviour. These practical sessions are delivered by professional driving Instructor of the NSW Driver Trainers Association.
